Achieving beautiful, healthy-looking skin is our mission at Joanna Young Skin. It’s common to deal with the appearance of dry, dull skin throughout the year, or think that signs of aging are inevitable. However, you can discover the appearance of radiant, healthy, younger-looking skin regardless of the season or your age! Our super moisturizers and hydrators in our Environ Focus Care Moisture+ range can help you achieve your skin care goals. Here’s what you need to know!
Super Hydration For Dry Skin When we say “intensive hydrating” we really mean it. Use a serum that contains a high concentration of hyaluronic acid (HA) – a naturally-occurring known moisture magnet derived from plant extracts. Include it in your skin care routine, and your hydrated-looking skin will thank you with a visibly smoother, plumper and more resilient appearance.
Gentle Exfoliation 1-2 Times Per Week It is important to include a mild exfoliating product at lease 1-2 time per week. Exfoliation can help revitalize the look of tired, aging or problematic skin. Use an alpha hydroxy acid, AHA, cream that contains a combination of fruit acids, to gently and naturally exfoliate the skin. You’ll be left with a moisturized and hydrated looking complexion and a radiant glow!
Moisturize Your Skin You should thoroughly nourish and refresh your skin with a moisturizer. Look for a variety of dynamic moisturizers and emollients in one product which can enhance the effects of the function of your skin’s moisture barrier and improve the benefits of the natural moisture factors. It comforts and soothes the look of irritated skin, and can be used over your other products to help relieve the appearance of dry skin.
Try Super Moisturizer This hydrating face cream can help you achieve the appearance of silky soft skin that looks truly revitalized and vibrant. The antioxidants in them are known to combat the effects of harmful environmental influences associated with visible signs of aging, such as sun damage and air pollution.
Finally, don’t forget your sunscreen!

“Self-care” has been a hot buzzword for a few years now, and for good reason. Taking the time to treat yourself prevents burning out in the high-stress society we live in today. Whether you’re a self-care pro or are just starting out, what better time to focus on becoming the best version of yourself than at the beginning of a new year (especially after the chaos of the past year)? Sure, there are the standard devices—go for a walk, take a bubble bath, make a cup of tea—but if you want to dive a little deeper, it may be time to see an esthetician.
I pride myself as an advanced esthetician here in this Newport Beach Bubble. With over 15 years of experience and training in both five-star luxury company’s, building my practices and with continuous trainings I know skin care, and I know exactly how to make you feel your best inside and out.
As estheticians, we are trained in a wide variety of practices related to skin care, including facials, chemical peels, body wraps, and even hair removal. Some are experts in the cucumbers-over-the-eyes spa facial that most people think of when they hear the word “esthetician,” but others, like myself, specialize in fields such as anti-aging and use medically advanced equipment in their work, like micro-current or radio frequency, a “muscle toning and lifting machine.”
While looking younger on the outside is appealing to many, the true beauty in seeing an esthetician is how it can make you feel, both physically and emotionally. One of the major emotional benefits comes from what we call “touch therapy,” which is a great stress reducer in times like this. It’s what makes you feel so relaxed after getting a massage or a pedicure. A reduction in stress levels not only increases feelings of relaxation and happiness in general, but it can also diminish inner anxiety you may be feeling, loosen any tenseness you’re holding in your muscles, and help you feel more prepared to conquer the day ahead of you.
Let me point out that the root word of esthetician is “aesthetic,” which suggests ideas of beauty. I have loved the efficacy of medical procedures with plastic surgeons, but I really feel like people get a deeper, more balancing impact from typical spa facials with a lot of pressure points, massage techniques, and therapeutic touch. I believe that if you have the right fusion of having that touch therapy, it’s very emotional. A lot of people will come to me and ask, ‘When can I come again?’ And it’s not necessarily because they need to come see me again two weeks later for a treatment but because they want that therapeutic touch. Seeing an esthetician can also eliminate that panicky feeling of standing in the aisle at the drug store or beauty retailer trying to figure out which of the hundreds of products on the shelf will work best for you. A good esthetician can recommend products that are potent with active ingredients as opposed to the overwhelming number of over-the-counter products that may only have small amounts of active ingredients and, therefore, don’t have much efficacy.
In a world where the average person’s daily schedule involves waking up, going to school/work, running errands, running your home, and going to bed just to get up and do it all over again the next day, it’s difficult to be your best self. Seeing an esthetician can help you take a step back and reevaluate your priorities in the coming year. You’re slowing your breath down and getting into your body and out of your head…. People get so caught up in their head about what’s next or what’s on their to-do list, and it’s a reminder of how good you can feel if you just take the time to slow down.
If fear of seeing an esthetician is holding you back from looking and feeling your best in this new year, I have seen it all and there is no need to be fearful when you’re in the treatment room. We often have clients who are wary of getting a facial treatment because of previous break outs or experiences they’ve seen on social media or TV. Let’s look back on the scene in Sex and the City when Samantha gets a chemical peel that turns her face bright red. They say, ‘Peels are going to make me look horrible.’ That’s absolutely not true. There’s all kinds of different peels. My team and I also stress that our office we practice services that are within our scope of practice. We will not perform services that we have no training on. Additionally, that to COVID we can assure you that we are sanitized and HEPA-filtered, lowering the risk of spreading illness.
As we continue through this new year, it’s time to focus on being our best physically, emotionally, and mentally. It doesn’t matter if you’ve already broken your resolution or if you didn’t set any to begin with; it’s never too late for a fresh start, and that can begin with calling up a local esthetician for a consult.
Micro-Channeling is a minimally invasive skin treatment that targets and diminishes the appearance of visible wrinkles, unwanted acne scars, and sun-spots. During the treatment, Joanna creates tiny pinholes to the outermost layer of the skin promoting a natural healing response. The pinholes also function as micro-channels for quick absorption when the serum is applied to the skin. The serum activates collagen-producing cells in your body to increase collagen production and create permanent new healthy skin!
Micro-channeling may be used as a separate treatment only or as an additional add-on to other skin treatments to enhance the effectiveness of skin health. To get an idea, Hydrafacial or chemical peels are perfect treatments for Micro-channeling pairing.
I am interested, can you tell me more about the procedure?
I myself, love this procedure. I highly recommended Micro-channeling to all my clients that are looking to improve their skin health, in the least abrasive way.
The treatment requires the usage of a handheld device, lightly grazing across the skin using a stamping motion type of pattern. Unlike micro-needling, this instrument does not cause damage or trauma to the surface of the skin. These microscopic abrasions stimulate and produces new collagen and elastin.
After the stamping phase is complete, we apply a skin serum to target areas to nourish the skin and regenerate new skin cells. There will be some downtime during the recovery stage, but it should be no longer than a few days. You can do your face, arms, neck, and stomach to regenerate tighter healthier skin.
The skin serum that is applied is a well-formulated concoction contains the following ingredients with benefits. (take home an extra vile for $90)
Vitamins A, B5, C, E
Anti Wrinkle & Stimulate Collagen Production
Human Growth Factors
During your recovery stage, it is important to keep up with maintenance in order to maximize the result. I highly recommend applying Sorella’s Quench & Protect Hydrating SPF 30. (purchase this on your next visit $51)
Leaves skin deeply moisturized
Excellent makeup base
Provides both UVA/UVB protection
Provides pure physical sun protection
Be Comfortable & Confident in your skin
No one should feel insecure about their skin, but the reality is that we all are fighting the same battle. Whether it is signs of aging or acne scars, we get self-conscious about our skin. When you are ready to take matters into your own hands, call or book online with Joanna. Together we can redefine age. $320 a treatment or $260 when added to another facial treatment, ie: a HydraFacial.
generally a good thing because it removes dead skin cells. Dead skin can make skin look dry and prevents any treatments you use
from being fully absorbed. However, if you exfoliate too often, are too
abrasive, or combine multiple exfoliators, the natural oils and healthy
bacteria that keep your skin balanced can be stripped which can cause
irritation. More intensive exfoliation
once a week (blackberry lime, or mint poppy) Preferably in the evenings so the
skin has time to regenerate without being exposed to the elements and you can
apply a nice barrier to the skin.
rethink how your skin needs to be exfoliated this is where I recommend having a
monthly HydraFacial. Every four weeks
you can check in with your esthetician and get idea of what you need, as your
skin changes on a seasonal basis it can also change on a monthly basis. Upgrade
your facial service with a Marine Mermaid, locks in moisture and increases
absorption of active ingredients.
This time of year is really dry and cold, cold air equals dry air. (winter)
Dry air sucks the moisture out of the skin and
compromises the condition of the skin. Dry skin is a weak skin and more vulnerable
to irritation an aging. Also, this time of year we have heater on in our homes
and indoor heating can have a similar drying effect on the skin as well. To keep your skin barrier strong and
functioning properly I recommend some moisturizers with ingredients that help
retain moisture I personally use one by Sorella Apothecary, The Balm, that is
recommended as a night cream and has a little bit of beeswax in it. Beeswax
provides a protective barrier to help keep the skin nourished while still
allowing for it to breath. Black Current Extract is high in vitamin C and rich
in fatty acids which reduces inflammation and helps bind moisture to the skin.
It has anti-aging benefits as well with Argireline (wrinkle reducer) and
palmitoyl tripeptide-37 (potent peptide that’s proven to decrease wrinkles by
45% in 28 days). Hyaluronic acid serums
are great for the new year, Sorella’s Main Squeeze Hydrating Serum layers great
under any moisturizer. It contains Snow Mushroom Extract which is 3-4x more
hydrating than hyaluronic acid. Also contains niacinamide that reduces
inflammation and restores the skin’s natural barrier. Cogan grass provides long
time moisturizing benefits without clogging pores.
it might be a clue that you have a skin condition that has not been yet
For example, the
tendency to flush or flash along with persistent redness on your cheeks, forehead
and chin are commonly signs of rosacea. Eczema also causes irritation and dry
flaky skin, both conditions are best treated by an aesthetician or under a
dermatologist’s care. Sensitive and
sensitized are two different things. I find a lot of people don’t make this
connection. Sensitive skin is genetic and sensitized is often from outside
factors like the with weather, harsh ingredients and or over exfoliation.
Don’t forget to
use a toner.
Drink water. We
tend to consume a lot of sodium heavy foods this time of year.
applied every evening before bed to lock in moisture and heal and repair
sensitive lip area
In addition, I
always recommend cleaning your make up brushes and discarding old make up that
may have bacteria buildup on it.
Our skin is constantly changing due to climate (changing seasons or vacationing) hormones or stress. Facial treatments can help slow down the aging process and prevent the appearance of wrinkles. These treatments can be as simple as a sound home care routine to professional exfoliant treatments, lymphatic drainage and hydrating treatments
If you are dedicated and committed to helping your skin health, home care is a big part of maintaining your skin. Any professional treatments will have less effect unless
you follow a good at home care routine. It can be as basic as a cleanser (cleansing twice on occasion), eye cream, a good hydrating serum or moisturizer (no matter if your dry or oily) and broad-spectrum sunscreen. If you want to help your skin cell turn over you can add in an exfoliate 1-2 times a week, this really helps bring blood to the surface, circulation and give you a nice glow.
Massaging your face with an anti-aging cream will immediately increase the blood circulation and oxygen flow, which promotes collagen production and enhances the elasticity of your skin. However, applying product to the outer layer of dead skin and peach fuzz is just a place for your product to hang out, inhibiting it from penetrating into your skin. Having your skin professionally exfoliated removes the grey layer of dry skin off your face so products can penetrate much better. Dermaplaning is a great way to exfoliate the first layer of dead skin plus the vellus hair (peach fuzz).
Peels and the Hydrafacial
I recommend monthly treatments to address areas of concern your skin. Fall is a really good time of year to start a peel series. I usually have my clients do a series of 3, every 4 weeks. Then maintain with a Hydrafacial membership, once a month to enhance your skin’s health. Hydrafacial is 3 steps and only 30 minutes, cleanse + peel (uncover a new layer of skin with a gentle exfoliation and relaxing resurfacing), extract + hydrate (remove debris from pores with painless suction, nourish with intense moisturizers that quench the skin) and fuse + protect (saturate the skin with antioxidants and peptides to maximize your glow).
If you really want healthy, glowing skin and to fight the signs of aging I also recommend a Lymphatic Drainage facial which works to improve circulation, as well as detoxify, tone, and firm skin. We can work on the entire body, face, arms, back, legs.
And always always always don’t forget Sunscreen. SPF 30 is a must every morning. If you maintain your skin with a solid home care routine, professional treatments to maintain, address concerns and wear sunscreen daily you can reverse signs of aging. I am committed. Are you?
Today we have so many options to enhance our eyelashes: Lash Extensions, lash growth enhancers (serums), Keratin Lash treatments (or perms), false lashes (strip lashes), and mascara. Today I’d like to go over these options and see what suits you best!
Let’s start with my favorite, eyelash extensions. I have been doing lashes for over 12 years now and it has come a long way. You need to be realistic and careful when choosing a lash studio. If the lashes are not applied correctly it could damage your natural lashes and cause irritation to the lash line. Also, the adhesive is very important. I always recommend non-formaldehyde adhesive which allows you to wet your lashes after your lash appointment. If the tech tells you to keep your eye dry for a day this is because water will activate the formaldehyde causing a fume that can get into your eye. Make sure to always do your research when choosing a lash studio and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Novalash is the best brand of adhesive Platinum Bond and Sensitive as well ae the lashes.
Now the fun stuff, picking your lashes! You have options when choosing your lash extensions which come in different lengths, thickness and curls.
The classic extension (1 extension on 1 lash) gives you a natural lash line.
Volume lashes (3-6 very thin lashes made into a fan and placed on 1 of your lashes) are what I wear. This creates a full fluffy effect; it is triple the amount of lashes added to your lash line. It does not have to be a heavy look, can be very natural or very dramatic.
Cashmere lashes are similar to classic though the tips of the lash have been split.
Real mink hair (not to be confused with the brand minky lashes) are a natural thin lash. Although they do not hold their curl long they are real, natural and pretty.
Every person has a different amount of natural lashes on their lash line with different thickness. The application appointment is made for the general lash line. This is where I think women need to be realistic with the outcome. If you want the dramatic thick lash line it may take a longer appointment or possibly 2 appointments. Lash extensions need touch up appointments, as you lose your lashes and or extensions you will want to fill in the gaps.
Lash Growth Enhancers
Lash growth serums can be used while you wear lash extensions. There is a lot of different lash growth serums on the market and I believe they all work to some degree. This is a good option for people wanting the growth for long lashes.
We offer Lash Dr. by Novalsh and GrandeLash.
Yumilash Keratin Lash Treatment
A great solution for woman that have had a reaction to lash extensions or just don’t have time for the maintenance is the Keratin lash lift. This is a treatment curls your natural lashes up, opens your eye and gives you a nice curl for 2-3 months. You can add a few extensions if you need more or wear mascara. Yumilash is the best brand I have found from Paris for this treatment.
Lots of options for mascara now a days. They have primers to thicken up the lash, wands that separate the lash and fibers that add length. I still stay away from mascara due to the raccoon eye, it always makes its way to create a dark circle around my eye
